In May The Flaming Terrapin was published simultaneously in Britain and the United States. Although it received very good reviews, it sold poorly and the couple continued to live in poverty. The Flaming Terrapin. How often have I lost this fervent mood, And gone down dingy thoroughfares to brood On evils like my own from day to day: 'Life is a dusty corridor,' I say, 'Shut at both ends.' But far across the plain, Old Ocean growls and tosses his grey mane, Pawing the rocks in all his old unrest Or lifting lazily on some white crest. Campbell had become famous, in England and America, ten years before with his energy-filled long poem `The Flaming Terrapin': `We wanted air,' said an English review, `and here is a south-wester straight from the sea.'.

The terrapin in eastern tradition is the tortoise that represents “strength, longevity, endurance and courage” and is the symbol of the universe. It is this “flaming terrapin” that tows the Ark, and wherever he crawls upon the earth creation blossoms forth. He is “masculine energy” and where his voice roars man springs forth from. a book-length poem filled with praise of Franco and condemnation of the Spanish Republic. When World War II broke out in September , Campbell denounced Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany and returned with his family to Britain.
